34 more deaths take monsoon fury toll in north India to 150 | India News – Times of India

The toll in the northern states ravaged by rains for the last six days reached 150 Thursday with 34 fresh casualties reported in the last 24 hours. The flood situation remained grim in Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh even as relief teams rescued more than 1,000 stranded tourists and locals from Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul Spiti and Kinnaur districts — including 255 people stuck in the picturesque Chandrataal area.
Uttar Pradesh accounted for most deaths at 17, while six casualties were reported from Himachal Pradesh, five from Haryana, four from Punjab and two from Uttarakhand.
While seven persons died in lightning strikes in UP, fivedied due to drowning, three in house collapse and two children were electrocuted. The toll reached 55 in UP. Several rivers in the state were flowing above the danger mark, especially the Yamuna and its tributaries due to rains in the Himalayan states. Officials said the Ganga was in a ‘severe flood situation’ at Badaun’s Kachhlabridge. This was thesame for the Yamuma at Mawi in Shamli district.
With six deaths Thursday, the toll in Himachal reached 33 while 16 people are missing. The cumulative toll reached 15 in Punjab, 16 in Haryana and 17 in Uttarakhand.
In Uttarakhand, a 20-yearold Gujarati pilgrim to the Kedarnath shrine became the latest victim of rockfalls, which has left 12 dead, 15 injured and three missing in four days of heavy rainfall.
On Thursday morning, the main bridge on Malan river, which connects Kotdwar with Laldhang and Bhabar area in Pauri Garhwal, collapsed, cutting off nearly two dozen villages from the district headquarters. Over 300 roads are out of bound across Uttarakhanddue to landslides.
