NEW DELHI: Upbeat over the party’s resounding success in the Karnataka assembly election earlier this year, the Congress has exuded confidence of “repeating 2023 in 2024 Lok Sabha election” in the state. It has set a target of winning at least 20 of the 28 seats in the state in the next parliamentary election.

A meeting of the Congress was held on Wednesday in the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters to review preparations of the party’s Karnataka unit for the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
The meeting was chaired by party president Mallikarjun Kharge and attended by former MP Rahul Gandhi, general secretary in-charge of organisation K C Venugopal, Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah and deputy CM D K Shivakumar among others.

In a tweet after the meeting concluded, Venugopal said Karnataka gave a historic mandate to the Congress. “We are working tirelessly to fulfil our guarantees and will usher in transformative changes in the state,” he said.
The senior Congress leader expressed confidence about the party’s performance in Karnataka in the 2024 Lok Sabha election and claimed that 2023 will be repeated. “Repeating 2023, Karnataka will resoundingly reject BJP in 2024. Neither do people believe PM Modi anymore, nor think that BJP’s motley group of incompetent MPs and Karnataka leaders can deliver on their hopes. Karnataka is firmly behind the Congress, be it Lok Sabha or Vidhan Sabha,” he said.

Later, talking to media persons, Congress MP in-charge of KArnataka Randeep Singh Surjewala, flanked by Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar at the AICC headquarters, said the party is optimistic about winning at least 20 seats.
The Congress’s performance in Karnataka in the 2019 Lok Sabha election was dismal. It had won just one out of the 28 Lok Sabha seats in the state though it clocked 32.11% of the votes.
Against it, the BJP had won a whopping 25 seats and garnered 51.75% of the votes.
JDS, which had contested in alliance with the Congress, also won only one seat and bagged 9.74% of the votes.
One remaining seat went to an independent candidate.
As against the poor performance in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, the Congress swept the assembly election held in May.
It won 135 of the 224 assembly seats by garnering 42.88% of the votes. On the other hand, the BJP could won only 66 seats and got 36% of the votes. JDS came third by winning 19 seats and receiving 13.3% of the votes.
In view of the stellar performance in the assembly election, the Congress is upbeat about its show in the next year’s parliamentary election.
