In a significant development in the Rashmika Mandanna Deepfake case, the Delhi Police has successfully apprehended the primary accused, ANI reported on Saturday. This marks a crucial breakthrough in the investigation, which has been ongoing since November 2023, when the video involving an AI-generated video of the Bollywood actor went viral on social media.
It was previously reported that the Delhi Police had tracked down four suspects associated with uploading the video online. However, the main conspirator behind the creation of the video had been on the run, as per police sources cited by ANI. The latest arrest comes nearly two months after Police, in November, announced that vital clues had been obtained in their investigation, and technical analysis was being employed to verify these leads.
As part of the technical analysis, officials have been diligently identifying all IP addresses linked to the uploading of the video. Efforts were made to trace the origin of the video and the location of its upload. The Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit had registered an FIR against unidentified individuals on November 11 after the Delhi Commission for Women issued a notice to the city police regarding the case.
The deepfake video, which went viral last year, depicted the face of a British-Indian influencer, being digitally replaced with that of the Bollywood actress.
Reacting to the incident, Rashmika expressed her concern over the misuse of technology, describing it as “extremely scary.”

Meanwhile, her ‘Goodbye’ co-star, Amitabh Bachchan, called for urgent legal action in response to the deepfake clip. He emphasized the need for a legal and regulatory framework to address deepfake-related issues in India.
Following the incident, the Delhi Police filed a case under sections 465 (forgery) and 469 (harming reputation) of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, along with sections 66C (identity theft) and 66E (privacy violation) of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
