BHOPAL: Chhindwara district court on Saturday sentenced six accused in tiger poaching case to three-year jail and a fine of Rs 60,000 each.
The order came after a probe by forest officers into the poaching at Pench tiger reserve in MP. A seventh suspect, Haripal Chauhan, has since passed away.
According to forest officers, the tiger fell victim to electrocution in Kumbh Pani buffer area of the park. Following probe, they filed charges against seven suspects – all with a role in the poaching. The poaching came to light on May 5, 2019, when forest officers in Ramtek forest range of Nagpur, Maharashtra arrested Ramdas Chauhan, Tarsingh Rathore, and Bhikam Rathore with tiger whiskers in their possession.
Investigation revealed a network of poachers, leading to arrest of Haripal Chauhan, who confessed to having killed a tiger through electrocution to perform black magic.
Detailed confessions revealed that the suspects rigged electrical wires to snare tigers within the reserve forest.
