Imperative for India & US to work together on regulating AI: Nadella – Times of India

: Microsoft chairman and CEO Satya Nadella said that it’s imperative, especially for India and the US, to cooperate in forming regulations around artificial intelligence (AI), instead of fracturing them.
“AI is in the air now,” Nadella said. “It’s (AI) a powerful new general-purpose technology that needs to be diffused to all corners of the world fast so that we can, in some sense, have that equal distribution of economic growth. And therefore, it’s imperative especially for India and the US to be able to cooperate on what are the norms and regulations, instead of fracturing them. Even a small startup out of India can create safe AI that is exportable or a small startup in the US that can produce something that is importable and that’s what I think would make it fantastic for both the countries,” Nadella said at Microsoft CEO Connection event in Mumbai on Wednesday.
The tech giant’s India-born CEO said perhaps, this is the first time he thought there’s no impedance on what’s happening in India and rest of world. “There is no gap. If anything, the use cases here are so unique and are paving their own path. We’re not just talking about AI, we’re scaling AI,” he said.
Microsoft counts Air India, TCS, Infosys and HCL as some of its key customers. Nadella’s tour of India coincides with his tenth anniversary as Microsoft CEO. Under his watch, its market cap has crossed $3 trillion, from a little over $300 billion when he took charge in 2014.

Nadella said Microsoft is planning to equip 2 million people in India with AI skills by 2025. About 16% of global AI talent is based in India and it will make 25% of the new additions to global workforce in the next decade.
