NEW DELHI: AAP functionary Atishi claimed on Thursday that the party’s national convener, Arvind Kejriwal, would be arrested in the next three-four days if the party entered into a seat-sharing agreement with Congress for the Lok Sabha polls.
Central Bureau of Investigation is going to issue a notice to the Delhi chief minister on Saturday or Sunday, Atishi said at a press conference.“Since the news of seat-sharing being almost final is floating in the media, AAP functionaries have been receiving messages that if the party doesn’t leave the INDIA bloc, Kejriwal will be arrested,” she claimed.
The talks for the alliance in Delhi is on the verge of finalisation, with AAP likely to contest on four seats — New Delhi, North West Delhi, West Delhi and South Delhi, and Congress fielding candidates in East Delhi, North East Delhi and Chandni Chowk. Atishi said leaders of the two parties might make an official announcement in a day or two.
“If you think that by threatening AAP you could push us back, you are making a mistake. AAP and Kejriwal are not afraid of jail. If you put every MLA in jail, new leaders will arise to save democracy,” she said.
Earlier in the day, the Delhi minister linked the fresh Enforcement Directorate (ED) summons to Kejriwal in the excise policy case to AAP’s victory in the Chandigarh mayoral polls through the Supreme Court verdict while maintaining that it was illegal. “The seventh ED summons without waiting for the (Rouse Avenue) court’s decision proves that the BJP-driven agency is attempting to intimidate and threaten AAP and CM Kejriwal rather than engaging in any legal process or investigation,” Atishi alleged. ED has moved court alleging that the CM doesn’t want to obey its summonses.
Calling Atishi’s statement the reflection of AAP’s frustration, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said, “No supporter of BJP will be intimidated by a beaten coalition. The entire AAP is aware that the mastermind behind the liquor scam is Arvind Kejriwal and he will be arrested someday.”
He claimed the investigative agencies were doing their job. “Kejriwal govt and his ministers have looted Delhi and the people of Delhi understand this. Therefore, Delhiites have decided to put all seven seats of Delhi in BJP’s hand in the upcoming election,” he added.
Claiming that AAP has guessed that Kejriwal’s arrest is certain, Sachdeva alleged Atishi was trying to obtain false sympathy by questioning the strategy of investigative agencies in advance.
BJP’s Ramvir Singh Bidhuri said, “No matter how many such efforts the chief minister makes, he will have to appear before ED. He cannot escape the hands of law.”
Meanwhile, sources said AAP might get a seat in Haryana and two in Gujarat, one of them being Bharuch, identified with the late Congress leader Ahmed Patel. His son and daughter are active in the constituency. His son Faisal Ahmed Patel posted on X, “If the Bharuch Lok Sabha seat is allotted to AAP under the alliance in the next Lok Sabha elections, neither I nor the conscientious workers of Congress will support the candidate of AAP.”
