AGRA: At least 24 pilgrims, including 10 children, died after a tractor-trolley carrying 54 villagers fell into a roadside pond in UP‘s Kasganj district Saturday. The victims, mainly women and kids, were on their way to Ganga for a dip on Magh Purnima. Twelve people were injured, most of them critically, reports Deepak Lavania.
The driver lost control while trying to avoid a collision with a car, resulting in the vehicle plunging into the pond. A few passers-by hit by the careening tractor-trolley also fell into the water.
‘Almost every family has lost someone’: UP tragedy scars village
An air of gloom hung over Kasapurvi village in Etah district, one of the worst affected by the accident that took place in Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj district on Saturday.
At least 10 people who died were from this village. Fourteen others were residents of three neighbouring villages – Rorhi, Kheriya and Banar, under the jurisdiction of Jaithara police station in Kasganj, reports Deepak Lavania.
Shivam Kumar along with his wife and three children had gone to Kasganj in the tractor-trolley. Four members of his family, except eight-year-old Anubhav, died in the accident.
For Gaurav Singh, the journey was meant to celebrate his son Sidhu’s ‘mundan’ ceremony. His wife Sapna, mother Puspa Devi, and grandmother Shakuntala lost their lives in the accident. Vinod Kumar, a resident of the village said, “It is a horror-filled day; bodies are arriving one after another. Nobody in our village had ever imagined that we would be seeing a tragedy of this scale.”
