And as it is highly likely that this edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) might be his last, there is a touch of nostalgia and farewell at every venue where MS Dhoni plays a match.
And the Wankhede stadium holds a special place in the former Indian captain’s heart as this was the venue where he had hit the match-winning six to win the 2011 ODI World Cup title for the country.
Playing his last IPL match at the Wankhede in all probability on Sunday, Dhoni’s unbeaten knock of 20 off just 4 balls proved to be decisive against Mumbai Indians as Chennai Super Kings won the match by the exact same margin.
On Monday, the official handle of the IPL shared a video on X with the title: ‘A Symphony in MS Dhoni’.
The video, divided in three acts, showcases the part Dhoni played in the match.
Act I is titled ‘The Thala enters‘ and it shows Dhoni walking in for warm-ups before the match as Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya runs in to give him a warm hug.
After some dribbling skills with a football, Dhoni shares a hug with MI batting coach Kieron Pollard while exchanging light banter with CSK bowling coach Dwayne Bravo.
Overlooking the ‘Victory Memorial Stand’ where the ball of the match-winning shot had landed on April 2, 2011, Dhoni practices some shots with the bat.
Act II is titled ‘For the fans‘ and has Dhoni walking in to bat amidst thunderous applause and cheer with just 4 balls left in the CSK innings.
Not to disappoint the fans, Dhoni hits three consecutive sixes off Pandya before taking 2 runs off the ball of the innings.
Act III is titled ‘The Finish‘ and has Dhoni walking in with the wicket-keeping gloves on. The crowd chants “Dhoni! Dhoni!” as CSK march towards a victory despite a magnificent unbeaten hundred by Rohit Sharma.
Dhoni is all smiles while shaking hands with teammates and the MI players and goes on to climb the storied steps of the iconic stadium towards the CSK dressing room.
