Modi 3.0 Cabinet: Six former CMs get key portfolios | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The portfolio allocation for the Modi Government 3.0 was released on Monday, featuring some surprise inclusions, though the top four ministries— home, defence, finance, and external affairs—were retained by Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nirmala Sitharaman, and Dr S Jaishankar, respectively. The list of Union Cabinet ministers also included six former chief ministers, such as former Bihar CM Jitan Ram Manjhi and former Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who previously served as the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, has been given the responsibility of handling the agriculture and rural development portfolios in the newly formed Union Cabinet.Meanwhile, the power portfolio will be managed by Manohar Lal Khattar, the former chief minister of Haryana.

Here is the list of the CMs and what they got:

Rashtrapati Bhavan has confirmed that former UP CM Rajnath Singh, will continue to serve as the defence minister in PM Modi’s cabinet, a position he has held since 2014. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Singh secured the Lucknow seat for the third consecutive term, defeating Samajwadi Party candidate Ravidas Mehrotra by 1,35,159 votes.
Former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh Shivraj Singh Chouhan, was appointed as the new rural development minister. The Ministry of Rural Development, tasked with overseeing the socio-economic progress of India’s rural areas. These include the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee (MGNREGA) scheme and the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), which aim to uplift the lives of people residing in the countryside.
Former Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar, has been appointed as the Housing and Urban Affairs Minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new Union Cabinet. He will succeed Hardeep Singh Puri, who has retained his position as the Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister in the new government.
The Union ministry of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME) has been assigned to Jitan Ram Manjhi, the leader of Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) and former Chief Minister of Bihar. Manjhi, who is the founding president of HAM, previously served as the minister for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes welfare in Nitish Kumar’s Cabinet. He emerged victorious in the Gaya seat during the 2024 general elections.
Sarbananda Sonowal, the former chief minister of Assam, has retained the Shipping portfolio and has been appointed as the Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new Cabinet.
H D Kumaraswamy, the JD(S) leader and son of former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, has been allocated the portfolio of Union minister for steel in the Modi 3.0 government. He will take over from Jyotiraditya Scindia, who has been given charge of the ministry of communications and the ministry of development of north eastern region in the new government. Additionally, Kumaraswamy has also been entrusted with the responsibility of serving as the minister of heavy industries.
