NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Congress, National Conference and PDP and accused Jammu and Kashmir‘s ‘three political families’ of destroying the state through their dynastic politics.
While addressing a rally in J&K’s Doda, PM Modi said, “This time’s assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir is between three families and the youth of Jammu and Kashmir. One family belongs to Congress, one family belongs to the National Conference and one family belongs to PDP…What these three families have done to you people in Jammu and Kashmir is no less than a sin.”
“Till now ‘Pariwarwad’ did not allow the youth to come forward and that is why after coming to power in 2014, I have tried to bring forward the new leadership of the youth in Jammu and Kashmir. Then in 2018, Panchayat elections were held here. In 2019, BDC elections were held and in 2020, DDC elections were held for the first time. Why were these elections held? So that democracy reaches the grassroots level in Jammu and Kashmir,” he added.
PM Modi also alleged that the ‘dynastic parties’ did not allowed new leadership to grow and made the state “hollow from within”
“After Independence, Jammu and Kashmir became the target of foreign powers and dynastic politics made this beautiful region hollow from within. The political dynasties projected their children and did not let new leadership grow,” PM Modi said.
PM Modi also took a sharp jibe at former Union minister Sushil Kumar Shinde’s recent admission that he was afraid of militants while visiting Jammu and Kashmir’s Lal Chowk during his tenure as home minister under the UPA-II regime.
PM Modi said, “Remember the time when an unofficial curfew would be imposed here as soon as the sun set?”
“The situation was such that even the Home Minister of the Congress-led central government was afraid to go to Lal Chowk,” he added.
These are the first assembly polls to be held Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370. There are a total number of 90 Assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir, out of which 7 seats are reserved for SCs and 9 seats are reserved for STs.
According to the Election Commission of India, Jammu and Kashmir has 88.06 lakh eligible electors.
In the previous Assembly elections, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) won 28 seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 25, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) won 15, and the Congress won 12.
