Chicago: O’Hare Airport tug driver critically injured in collision with aircraft – The Times of India
A 64-year-old airport tug driver was critically injured after his vehicle collided with an Air Wisconsin flight 6181 aircraft at O’Hare International Airport on Saturday evening, according to The Mirror.
The American Eagle-operated flight was taxiing towards the gate when the aircraft’s wing struck the tug, causing it to overturn and trap the driver underneath.
According to ABC7 Chicago, emergency responders quickly transported the driver to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where he was initially in critical condition with head and lower body injuries but has since been stabilized, as confirmed by Chicago police.
The incident occurred at 6:58 pm (local time) in the 0-100 block of West Twya Street, and authorities are still investigating the circumstances.
Despite the severity of the accident, no passengers or crew aboard the aircraft were injured, and all passengers were safely bused to the terminal, according to ABC7 Chicago. The Chicago Department of Aviation confirmed that the crash did not significantly impact airport operations.
Both American Airlines and United Airlines have issued statements regarding the crash. American Airlines stated, “Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and team members, and we are reviewing this incident”.
United Airlines, whose employee was operating the tug, added, “We are ensuring he receives any necessary support and care.”.
This crash marks the third aviation-related accident this week, following two deadly incidents.
Seven people died and 19 were injured in a Philadelphia plane crash on Friday, while recovery efforts continue for Wednesday’s mid-air collision near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport between a PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 aircraft and a Sikorsky H-60 military helicopter.
Authorities continue their investigation into the O’Hare crash, with Area Five detectives leading the probe.
