A three-year-old girl was killed on Monday after a loudspeaker installed for Republic Day celebrations collapsed on her in Mumbai’s Vikhroli area. The incident took place in Tagore Nagar around 11 am and was captured on CCTV.
The victim has been identified as Jahnvi Solkar. Police said two large loudspeakers had been kept on the ground by a local group organising Republic Day events in the area. The 77th Republic Day was celebrated across the country on Monday.
According to the police, the accident happened while the child was running in a narrow lane. CCTV footage shows a scrap dealer walking ahead of her with a large bag of fabric scraps. As he passed, the bag accidentally hit the wire connected to the loudspeakers. Moments later, the speakers lost balance and fell on the child.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Chandrakant Naikwadi, Senior Inspector at Vikhroli police station, said the man walked past after hitting the wire, unaware of what had happened behind him.
“A fabric scrap dealer was going ahead of the girl with a bag that hit the wires of the speaker. The man walked past, and as the girl was running, the two loudspeakers fell on her, killing her,” he said.
Local residents rushed Jahnvi to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared her dead on arrival. The police were informed soon after and launched an investigation into the incident.
Inspector Naikwadi said that unlike earlier years, the speakers were not placed on an elevated platform but were kept on the ground. Police reviewed CCTV footage from the area, which confirmed that the wire was pulled when the scrap dealer’s bag brushed against it.
Based on the findings, the Vikhroli police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with causing death by negligence. The FIR has been filed against the mandal owner, Vinod Parmar, who arranged the loudspeakers, and the scrap dealer, Sayyad Guran.
