French carmaker Citroen has said it will not chase aggressive market share in India, but will grow its size and scale at a steady pace as it develops and drives in locally made vehicles in India.
Citroen global CEO Thierry Koskas said the company will have a conservative approach to its India expansion strategy, unlike some newer entrants like Kia and MG that have grown rapidly on swift expansion of models and dealerships.
“The idea is to go for a steady growth approach, and not go for fireworks by chasingnumbers. We want to introduce new models in the market, and get the brand known first,” Koskas told TOIas the company unveiled a new locally produced SUV, the C3 Aircross, which looks to takeon models such as Hyundai’s Creta, Kia’s Seltos, and Maruti’s Grand Vitara.
Koskas said the company will work on a “progressive strategy” for India, which will see it start modestly even onthe dealer front as it plans to expand its retail strength from 30 outlets to around 60 by the end of this year. “We want to have a network where our dealers are also profitable. ”
The company started operations in India in 2021, with the C5 Aircross SUV that came in as an import. The C5, which was more of a technology showcase product for the company, was followed by its first locally produced car — the C3 hatchback petrol.
Citroen is part of Stellantis group, formed in 2021 by the merger between Fiat Chrysler and PSA. Jeep is also part of the group and sells SUVs in India, which it produces in a manufacturing JV with Tata Motors.
