Jayant Nahata is an IIT Delhi graduate.

Despite being born and raised in Kolkata, Jayant’s roots were deeply ingrained in Old Rajinder Nagar, the UPSC hub in Delhi.

Jayant Nahata, an IAS officer from the 2020 batch, learned priceless insights throughout his district training, even though many others struggled during their administrative training. Along with sharpening his administrative abilities, his experiences also lined up with significant life events like marriage and the emergence of adulthood’s complications. Jayant’s path is an intriguing story of growth—both emotional and professional—amidst the difficulties of undergoing civil services training.

Despite being born and raised in Kolkata, Jayant’s roots were deeply ingrained in Old Rajinder Nagar, the UPSC hub in Delhi, where he was surrounded by people who aspired to work in civil services. After his parents relocated to Delhi when he was two years old, his academic path took a dramatic change in 2013 when he was accepted into the esteemed Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. He studied biochemical engineering and biotechnology for five years, earning a B.Tech and an M.Tech in the process.

When Jayant started assiduously studying for the Civil Services Examination in his fourth year at IIT Delhi, it marked a turning point in his life. Inspired by seniors who had passed the test, he realised that a career in the civil services may lead to significant changes in society. His propensity for making decisions and bringing about constructive change became evident during his term as the General Secretary of the Students’ Affairs Council when he introduced an electronic voting method with great success and attracted the attention of major dailies.

However, his UPSC journey was not without its fair share of challenges. In his first attempt, he cleared the prelims and mains but could not clear the interview. He learned from his mistakes and tried again in the year 2019, this time his hard work paid off and he cleared the exam with 298th rank and got a place in the Indian Civil Accounts Service. However, he did not stop there, his dream was to become an IAS, so he continued his efforts and took the exam again for the third time. Attaining a rank of 56, he realised his aim of becoming a member of the Indian Administrative Service. Presently he is posted as an Officer Trainee.
