NEW DELHI: Beijing has been successfully chosen as the host city for the 2027 World Athletics Championships. The decision follows the withdrawal of Rome’s bid earlier in the day, as the Italian athletics federation faced challenges in securing financial support from the government.
This marks Beijing’s second time hosting the World Athletics Championships, with the city previously staging the event in 2015.World Athletics President Sebastian Coe extended congratulations to Beijing, highlighting the city’s successful bid and reminiscing about the vibrant showcase of global athletics at the National Stadium in 2015.”Congratulations to Beijing on their successful bid to host the World Athletics Championships in 2027, 12 years after our athletes lit up the National Stadium for the 15th edition of our global showpiece,” stated Sebastian Coe. He also acknowledged China’s significant contribution to the Wanda Diamond League broadcast, noting a cumulative audience of 368.9 million in 2023.

China continues to strengthen its presence in international athletics, with plans to host the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Nanjing next year. Additionally, the country is set to kick off the 2024 Diamond League season with two meets in Xiamen and Shanghai in April.
Tokyo is scheduled to host the World Championships in 2025, contributing to Asia’s prominence in the global athletics calendar. The selection of Beijing as the host for the 2027 World Athletics Championships reflects the city’s capabilities and commitment to hosting major sporting events on the world stage.
