About the Author:

Jacob Jose is a seasoned professional in sustainable agriculture, fair trade, and community development. An alumnus of the Organic Foundation Course Masterclass 2022, jointly organised by Asian Local Governments for Organic Agriculture and IFOAM Asia, he is the Manager of Business Development at PDS Organic Spices, Kerala, and holds a postgraduate degree in Business Administration (MMH) from Marian College Kuttikkanam (Autonomous), currently pursuing a Master’s in Environmental Science. As a board member and coordinator for Sahyadri Organic Small Farmers Consortium, he supports producers through training and technical assistance. He is also the Convener of the Indian Fairtrade Coffee Producer Network and a member of various national and international sustainability organizations.

Q: What Inspired You To Write This Book?

A: With nearly a decade of hands-on experience in the social enterprise sector, I have dedicated my career to fostering sustainable development and empowering rural communities. Currently, I work with Peermade Development Society, a prominent NGO based in the Idukki district of Kerala, India. Our mission is to uplift and support rural communities through sustainable agricultural practices and holistic development initiatives. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of collaborating with a diverse array of organizations, each with its unique challenges and triumphs. These experiences have enriched my understanding of the social enterprise landscape and provided me with a deep appreciation for the power of purpose-driven businesses.

A: This book, Purpose, Passion and Profit, offers actionable insights and strategies to help social enterprises market their mission- driven products effectively. By integrating traditional marketing principles with a deep understanding of social impact, this book guides readers through building strong stakeholder relationships measuring impacts and crafting compelling narratives.

A: The title “Purpose, Passion, and Profit” encapsulates the core values and motivations driving social enterprises. Here’s what each component signifies: 1. Purpose: Refers to the central mission or cause that drives the social enterprise. It embodies the reason why the organization exists and the positive impact it seeks to achieve in society or the environment. 2. Passion: Represents the deep commitment, enthusiasm, and dedication of those involved in the enterprise. It reflects the emotional and personal investment in pursuing the organization’s purpose and goals. 3. Profit: While not the sole focus, profit in this context signifies financial sustainability and viability. It emphasizes the importance of generating revenue to support the enterprise’s mission and to ensure long-term impact and growth. Together, “Purpose, Passion, and Profit” underscore the holistic approach of social enterprises, where financial success is balanced with a strong commitment to social or environmental impact and driven by genuine dedication and enthusiasm.

Q: What Did You Learn When Writing The Book?

A: For social enterprises, operating with a purpose entails more than just selling products or services—it’s about fostering lasting connections with people. Beyond the quality of what they offer, it’s the loyalty of customers inspired by their mission that propels these businesses forward. One key lesson learned is that compelling, real-time impact stories serve as powerful marketing tools, resonating deeply with audiences and fostering long-term associations. Embracing modern marketing tools such as AI and social media proves to be not only effective but also cost-efficient in spreading their message and engaging with a broader audience, amplifying the reach and impact of their mission-driven initiatives.

Q: Do You Believe A Book Cover Plays An Important Role In The Selling Process?

A: A book cover plays a pivotal role in the selling process for several reasons. First and foremost, it serves as the initial point of contact for potential readers, creating a crucial first impression that can determine whether a book is noticed among countless others. Beyond mere visibility, a well-designed cover enhances the book’s visual appeal, capturing the essence of its genre, tone, and themes in a compelling manner. Moreover, the cover contributes to the book’s overall branding, reinforcing the author’s or publisher’s identity and establishing a connection with the target audience.
