Q: What Inspired You To Write This Book?
A: The very concept of ‘Vachana’ in Basavanna’s context transcends mere speech; it embodies a solemn promise, an ethical commitment (‘ಆಣೆ-ಪ್ರಮಾಣ’). The idea that words are not fleeting sounds but carry the weight of one’s actions and truth (“ನುಡಿದಂತೆ ನಡೆ”) offers a powerful theme about the moral responsibility inherent in language.
Q: Can You Tell Us About The Book?
A: Today’s society is facing serious challenges in areas such as social justice, equality, and human rights. Discrimination based on caste, religion, gender, and economic status is still prevalent. In such a context, Basavanna’s saying, “If you inquire into the caste of a devotee, I swear by your queen’s honor!” (a Vachana that essentially means one should not discriminate among devotees based on caste), emphasizes the importance of social harmony and inclusivity. The concept of a casteless, classless society advocated by the Vachanas is an ideal that is highly essential for today’s divided society. Basavanna plays a significant role in fostering rationality, a scientific temper, and critical thinking. Basavanna’s courage in questioning superstitions, outdated customs, and meaningless traditions shows the way for making rational decisions and becoming free from exploitation even in today’s society.
