A historic UEFA Conference League title win and a guaranteed UEFA Champions League spot next season: was it a successful season for Chelsea? “Ask the captain,” says star player Cole Palmer.
Chelsea overcame a lackluster first half to claim the Conference League crown with a 4-1 victory over Real Betis on Wednesday, achieving their pre-season goal to win the trophy—a goal that captain Reece James believed was a must.
“It’s a great feeling. As the game progressed, we grew into it and thankfully scored four goals in the second half,” James told TNT Sports.
“Entering this competition, it was something we had to win. Next season, we’re going again in the Champions League.”
“In the first half, I thought we were flat. The game didn’t go our way early on, and it looked like it took a lot out of us. We needed a reaction in the second half, and we got it,” James said, pointing to an elated Cole Palmer.
But then came the all-important question: was it a successful season for the Blues?
James replied, “I’ll let you answer that,” while Palmer calmly added to the intrigue by saying, “Ask the captain.”

They will compete in the Champions League next season by virtue of finishing fourth in the Premier League, marking a significant step up in quality for their young squad.
Chelsea fans may have mixed feelings about the prestige of the Conference League trophy, but they are united in their belief that the future looks bright for the London club.
