Premier League strugglers Manchester United have had to endure a challenging phase of transition that has been persisting around the club ever since the departure of ‘The Godfather’ Sir Alex Ferguson in the year 2013. The fabled Mancunian club have failed to lift the English top-flight title since SAF’s final year as boss at Old Trafford and have been condemned to fluctuate between multiple managers and playing styles in an attempt to restore the side to its original glory.
Ruben Amorim has been scrutinized heavily for his eight months in charge of the club as the Portuguese manager seeks to implement his preferred style of play at the English side amid overwhelming challenges, which hasn’t gone to plan as yet.
While calls for the sacking of the former Sporting Lisbon continue to get louder with each passing game, United look to be falling into yet another costly error-trap in the choice of the head coach as they have had to payout a whopping £70 million to managers just to part way on the back on undesirable stints.
It started with the sacking of former head coach David Moyes, who was given the boot after just 10 months of being handpicked by the outgoing Alex Ferguson. The Everton boss was paid a £5.2m payoff in the year 2014, before the club appointed Dutchman Louis Van Gaal at the helm of the club.
The Iron Tulip, however, failed the club in its quest for the PL title in his time in charge of the club between 2014 and 2016, and was sacked by the board a day after he had helped the side to a FA Cup title. The Dutchman was paid £8.4m to be released from his duties prematurely, as the club decided to bring in Jose Mourinho.
Former Chelsea manager Mourinho was brought in to guarantee success in the English top-flight, but was unable to take United past a 2nd place finish during his time with the Red Devils. Mourinho led Unite to the UEFA Europa League title, but his failures in the league prompted United to go for a shake up and offered the Portuguese manager a hefty £19.6m payoff.
Then came in United’s own golden boy. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The man who restored joy to the passionate fanase. Despite the lack of silverware, followers of the club seemed to be happy after a prolonged period, however, the absence of success at one of the biggest clubs on the planet took a toll and the man who helped the club to the UCL title in the year 1999 under SAF was given the sack, along with a £9.1m severance package.
Ralf Ragnick came in with the promise of revolutionising the side as he took charge as the temporary manager of the team as the side remained in the quest for a permanent boss, before talking up the role of the sporting director. However, all the plans failed as Ragnick, who became quickly disillusioned with the state and policies of the club opted to take up the Austria head coach role instead after just 4 moths in charge of United. The Austrian was handed a £14.7m compensation before he walked out the United door in the year 2022.
In came Erik ten Hag, the man who had helmed Ajax’s iconic UCL run in 2019, with a lot of expectation and hope. However, despite his near-three-year tenure at the club, he failed to impress fans and the board and was kicked out in 2024 with a payoff of £10.4m.
Amorim came in fresh off guiding Sporting to the Portuguese title and was expected to do great things at OT, however, his first eight months have been underwhelming to say the least.
