Premier League legend Thierry Henry gave his opinion on Liverpool star Mohamed Salah going public with his frustrations with head coach Arne Slot not playing him as much as the Egyptian would like.
Henry reflected on his own career and revealed that despite not always seeing eye to eye with the boss, he opted to bite his tongue in order to protect the club.
“I had problems with Wenger, with Guardiola. Have you ever heard me talk about it publicly? Never. I protected the club.”
“When you play for a club, you must protect it at all costs. No matter what’s happening internally, you protect the club — your teammates, the manager, the staff.”
“You can be angry, frustrated, disagree… but you don’t air dirty laundry in public, especially when the club is going through difficult moments.”
“Instead, you wait, you sort things out internally, and then, if you want to leave or speak your mind, you do it at the right time.”
“I understand the ego and Mo’s frustration… He scores 38 goals and ends up on the bench, but there comes a point where you must put the team before yourself.”
Salah, who has netted 250 goals in 420 appearances, has won two Premier League titles and the Champions League since joining from Roma in 2017. But, the Egyptian has struggled this season, scoring just five times in 19 appearances as the Reds languish in ninth, 10 points behind leaders Arsenal after 15 games.
Salah was left out of the Reds squad for their UEFA Champions League game against Inter as a result of his outburst, but the Reds managed to register a 0-1 win on the road despite the absence of the star winger.
“I’m very, very disappointed. I have done so much for this club down the years and especially last season. Now I’m sitting on the bench and I don’t know why. It seems like the club has thrown me under the bus. It is very clear that someone wants me to take the blame,” Salah had said.
“I got a lot of promises in the summer and so far I am on the bench for three games, so I can’t say they keep the promise. I always had a good relationship with the manager, and suddenly, we don’t have any relationship. It seems someone doesn’t want me at the club,” the winger stated.
“This club, I always support it. My kids will always support it. I love the club so much, I will always do. I called my mum yesterday and said, ‘Come to the Brighton game.’ I don’t know if I am going to play or not, but I am going to enjoy it,” the Egyptian had added.
