One of the earliest lessons a child learned was that their teacher was a figure of wisdom, deserving unwavering respect. As a child, most of us have seen parents welcoming teachers with genuine grace, dignity, and trust. However, a recent incident in Kolkata tells a very different story and has left the social media in disbelief.

A tutor in Kolkata allegedly faced a humiliating situation after being denied access to a washroom and asked to use the society’s common facility instead. In a Reddit post that quickly went viral, the teacher opened up about the experience, sparking widespread discussion online.

The family in question, had persistently urged the teacher to take up the classes, and after repeated requests, he eventually agreed. It was his third day teaching the child when the incident occurred.

When he stepped out to use the washroom, he casually asked the student where it was, but was taken aback when the child replied that he would first have to ask his mother for permission. The teacher shared, “The mother came out and straight up told me to go downstairs and use the society’s common washroom because she doesn’t allow teachers to use their washroom.”

“I was absolutely stunned. I felt so humiliated and disrespected. I packed my things, left as soon as I could, and immediately informed them that I wouldn’t be continuing the classes. I just can’t wrap my head around it. Which era are we living in? They live in a good, posh society, seem highly educated, and look affluent, but where are the basic ethics, values, and human decency? Treating a teacher – or anyone you invite into your home – like they are untouchable is disgusting,” he continued.

Social media users rallied in support of the teacher, expressing disbelief that such incidents still occur today, while several also shared that they had faced similar experiences themselves.

A Reddit user commented, “Hard to believe such an incident in 2026 (or had it been 1900 even)! You did the right thing. If parents don’t have manners, it is difficult to teach children.” Another wrote, “As a struggling scholarship student i used to tutor students in 90s Kolkata. Had faced several such incidents. You did exactly what I would have done.” The third user commented, “Yeah you did the right thing. First begging you to tutor their kid then disrespecting at this level? You did good by quitting on spot.”
