A senior Iranian military official on Sunday warned that Israel’s strike on Beirut’s southern suburbs would not go “unanswered” by Tehran, according to Iranian media, adding uncertainty to the deal aimed at ending the war, which US President Donald Trump had said would be signed imminently.
“Without a doubt, these crimes will not go unanswered,” Brigadier General Mohammad Jafar Asadi, deputy commander of Iran’s highest military command, told Defa Press news agency following the attack.
At the same time, Iran’s chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf also said there was “no point” in continuing peace talks with the United States following the strike in Lebanon, accusing Washington of failing to uphold its commitments and suggesting it lacked either the will or the ability to do so.
In post on X, Ghalibaf wrote: “The Zionists’ aggression against Dahieh once again showed that the United States either lacks the will to implement its commitments or lacks the ability to do so.”
“If you do not have the will or the ability to fulfil your commitments, then there is no point in talking about continuing down this path,” he added.
