Indian tennis star Sumit Nagal ended a long wait for ATP Challenger success by winning the Intaro Open clay-court tournament in Targu Mures, Romania, defeating French qualifier Felix Balshaw 6-3, 7-5 in Saturday’s final.

The victory marked Nagal‘s first ATP Challenger title in more than two years, with his previous triumph at this level coming at the Heilbronn Challenger in Germany in June 2024.

The 28-year-old claimed his seventh ATP Challenger singles crown overall and his fifth on clay, continuing his impressive record on the surface.

The title earned Nagal 75 ATP ranking points, which are expected to move him up to around world No. 219 when the updated rankings are released. He also received prize money of €15,510.

Nagal dictated play for much of the opening set with consistent baseline tennis before facing greater resistance in the second, as Balshaw stayed within striking distance. The Indian, however, maintained his composure in the decisive moments to seal a straight-sets victory.

The win provides a significant lift for Nagal, who has spent most of the season on the Challenger circuit while working to improve his ranking and return to the upper tier of the men’s game.

Before his title-winning run in Romania, Nagal had featured in 13 Challenger tournaments this season but had not progressed beyond the second round. His best result prior to this week was a quarterfinal appearance at the Chisinau Challenger in Moldova.
