A horrific case of alleged child abuse has emerged from Telangana’s Suryapet district, where a couple has been arrested for allegedly subjecting their two young sons (5-year-old and 3-year-old) to prolonged physical torture, leaving the children with burn marks, fractures and deep psychological trauma. The accused have been identified as Ravi Nakarekanti and his wife Indu.
According to police, Ravi and Indu routinely assaulted their sons – Dhanush and Hemanth – using iron rods, heated metal ladles and cigarettes, inflicting injuries over an extended period. Investigators said the children also bore scars that suggested they had been branded with hot objects. One of the boys reportedly suffered broken bones due to repeated beatings, while both children had multiple old and fresh injuries across their bodies.
During questioning, the accused allegedly told investigators that they felt the children were an obstacle to their “independence” and freedom. According to police, the couple claimed the boys were hampering their lifestyle, and they resorted to extreme violence to “discipline” them whenever they cried, demanded attention or did not obey instructions. Investigators said the abuse was not triggered by any single incident but had become a pattern of sustained cruelty.
The abuse came to light after neighbours grew suspicious on hearing the children’s cries and noticing visible injuries. Their complaint prompted officials from the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), the District Child Protection Unit and the police to intervene. The children were rescued from the house and shifted to safety, where medical examinations documented the extent of the abuse.
Police have registered a case against the couple under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, as applicable. The accused have been arrested and remanded to judicial custody, while authorities continue to investigate whether the children had been subjected to abuse over several years.
Officials told reporters that the injuries were not the result of isolated incidents but pointed to sustained and repeated violence. The boys allegedly told authorities that they were beaten with iron rods, branded with heated ladles and burned with cigarettes as punishment for minor mistakes. Medical teams are treating the children, while counsellors have also been engaged to help them recover from the trauma, according to officials.
The shocking episode comes just days after another disturbing case from Bengaluru, where police arrested a couple for allegedly killing their 11-month-old daughter and attempting to pass off her death as an accidental fall from a bed. Investigators later concluded that the child had died of severe internal injuries inconsistent with the parents’ version. According to the police probe, the infant was fatally injured during a domestic quarrel, after which the couple allegedly tried to stage the incident as an accident before post-mortem findings exposed the truth.
