A coal mine explosion claimed the lives of at least 11 miners, while dozens remain trapped underground in Pakistan’s Balochistan province. Rescue teams are racing against time to reach the stranded workers amid extremely challenging conditions.
The incident occurred at the Sor-Range coal mine, triggering a large-scale rescue operation involving multiple emergency response agencies. Authorities say efforts are continuing despite difficult terrain and hazardous conditions inside the mine.
Provincial Minister for Mines and Minerals, Mir Shoaib Nosherwani, confirmed the toll, saying, “So far, the bodies of 11 miners have been recovered in the tragic coal mine accident in Sorine, Balochistan.”
Providing an update on the ongoing operation, Nosherwani added, “Rescue teams are continuously carrying out the operation despite extremely difficult conditions.”
The Balochistan government has mobilised all available resources to assist in the rescue mission and has announced financial compensation for the victims and their families. Authorities have also ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident, along with a review of mine safety protocols.

The Sor-Range coal mine is an active underground coal mining operation located along Bijli Road in Quetta, Balochistan, Pakistan. It is one of the primary coal-producing regions in Balochistan, extracting sub-bituminous coal.
The mine is heavily documented for its hazardous working conditions, with frequent deep underground safety incidents reported over the years.
