Debasish Rath is an engineer by profession, an accidental stand-up comedian, and a writer by poor life choices. He began his public speaking journey by embarrassing himself in front of 800 people and somehow convinced himself that the logical next step was to become a stand-up comedian. Over the next seven years, he performed more than **2,000 shows and open mics**, built a comedy collective (**Suno Bey**), co-founded a comedy club (**Comedy Garage**), appeared on **Sony SAB**, performed for audiences across India and internationally, wrote jokes that worked, wrote many more that didn’t, and learned that silence can sometimes be louder than applause. Away from comedy, Debasish works as an engineering professional in the energy industry, proving that it is possible to spend weekdays discussing electricity and weekends discussing why Indian weddings serve dessert before people have finished digesting the starter. He is also the author of two previous books and firmly believes that storytelling, humour, and public speaking are skills that can change lives. When he isn’t working, writing, or wondering whether that uncle standing in the supermarket queue can become a joke, he is trying to convince his wife that *this* really is his last project. Q: What Inspired You To Write This Book?

A: A lot of people see comedians on stage and think we just wake up funny. They don’t see the years of bombing, self-doubt, awkward silences, and chasing five minutes of stage time. I wanted to tell that untold story. More importantly, I wanted people who fear public speaking to know that if someone who once froze in front of 800 people could perform for thousands, then change is possible.

Q: Can You Tell Us About The Book?

A: Stand-Up Comedy: A Serious Business is a funny, true story of an engineer who accidentally entered stand-up comedy to overcome stage fear and somehow ended up performing over 2,000 shows, appearing on television, building a comedy club, and making complete strangers laugh. It’s equal parts comedy, motivation, and behind-the-scenes reality of what comics go through.

Q: What Does The Title Mean?

A: People think stand-up comedy is just holding a microphone and talking. The title is ironic because behind every five-minute set are hundreds of hours of writing, testing, failing, editing and performing. Making people laugh consistently is one of the most serious businesses I’ve ever experienced.

Q: What Did You Learn When Writing The Book?

A: I realized that writing comedy and writing a book are two completely different sports. On stage, if a joke doesn’t work, you move on in ten seconds. In a book, that joke stares at you for three days until you rewrite it. I also rediscovered how many wonderful, ridiculous and emotional moments shaped my journey.

Q: Was The Character Inspired By A Real Person?

A: Yes. The main character is me, and almost every incident in the book is based on real experiences. Some conversations have been recreated for storytelling, but the journey, struggles and victories are genuine.

Q: What Do You Think Happened To The Characters After The Book Ended?

A: Most of us continued growing in our own directions. Some are still performing stand-up, some balanced comedy with their careers, and all of us still remain connected through the memories we created. Comedy gave us friendships that lasted much longer than many of our jokes.

Q: What Does Success Mean To You? What Is The Definition Of Success?

A: Success is sleeping peacefully knowing I gave my best. It’s not about fame or money. It’s about creating something that genuinely impacts people and makes them smile, think or become a little more confident.

Q: What Advice Would You Give To Aspiring Authors?

A: Don’t wait until you think you’re ready. Start writing. Your first draft doesn’t have to be perfect; it just has to exist. The blank page cannot be edited, but a bad draft can become a great book.

Q:How Long Does It Take You To Write A Book?

A: The writing took around a year. The experiences took seven years. Collecting stories was easy because I had lived them. Deciding which embarrassing stories to publish took much longer.

Q: Where Do You Get Your Information Or Ideas For Your Books?

A: From real life. Every awkward meeting, family gathering, traffic signal, office email, airport announcement or random stranger can become a story. Once you become a comedian, your brain stops looking at life normally and starts looking for punchlines everywhere.

Q: Do You Try More To Be Original Or To Deliver To Readers What They Want?

A: Originality always comes first. Readers can sense honesty. If I write something that genuinely happened to me, chances are someone else has felt the same way. That’s where connection happens.

Q: How Did Publishing Your First Book Change Your Process Of Writing?

A: It made me appreciate structure. Every chapter had to entertain while also moving the story forward. I write with an open mind without any biases and I let the ideas translate into characters and characters into chapters in case of fictions.

Q: What, In Your Opinion, Are The Most Important Elements Of Good Writing?

A: Honesty, simplicity and emotion. Readers don’t remember complicated words; they remember how a story made them feel. If you can make someone laugh, think and relate in the same chapter, you’ve done your job.

Q: How Do Your Book Get Published?
