Premier League champions Arsenal will host Borussia Dortmund at the Emirates Stadium in London on Sunday as part of the 2026 Emirates Cup in a pre-season friendly.

This will be Mikel Arteta’s side’s third game of the pre-season. Arsenal began the summer with a 4-1 victory over Girona, before a sobering 3-1 defeat to Real Betis in Dublin left the Gunners searching for answers just over a week out from the Community Shield against Manchester City.

The issues against Betis — who were playing their sixth match of the pre-season — were clearly about personnel and freshness, despite Arteta looking quite frustrated with his players.

Arsenal remain without several players who featured deep into the FIFA World Cup, including Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino and David Raya.

William Saliba continues to be sidelined by a back injury. Captain Martin Odegaard, however, is expected to get his first pre-season minutes on Sunday, as the side looks to show a bit more sharpness in front of its home crowd, which will welcome the team as champions of the country for the first time.

All eyes will still be on 15-year-old Max Dowman, and Hale End graduates Ethan Nwaneri, Myles-Lewis Skelly and Marli Salmon. It remains to be seen if new signing Bruno Guimares is involved in the game. He has been training for a couple of days but might still need some time to get up to speed.

Dortmund, under new head coach Niko Kovac, arrive on the back of a mixed pre-season that has included wins over Rot-Weiss Oberhausen (3-1) and FC Tokyo (1-0) alongside defeats to Fortuna Dusseldorf (1-2) and Cerezo Osaka (0-1) in Japan. This is the penultimate warm-up match for the Germans, who face Roma next weekend before opening their season against Bayern Munich in the German Super Cup.
