The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has provisionally suspended Cristiano Ronaldo from the national team for leaving the team camp in the middle of the Nations League campaign. The striker is set to face a disciplinary investigation for his actions.

Ronaldo, the leading goalscorer and most-capped player for Portugal, left the camp ahead of a match against Denmark. The 41-year-old forward was benched for the previous fixture against Norway, with manager Jorge Jesus subsequently confirming that he would not start the next match against Denmark.

“Disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, following a decision by the Non-Professional Section on October 9, 2026,” the federation said in a statement.

Ronaldo released a lengthy statement on Tuesday, attributing his actions to a breach of trust from Jesus. Ronaldo said the manager had initially proposed that he start Portugal’s first and final home matches during the international window while staying behind for the away fixtures against Norway and Denmark. The Portugal captain rejected the arrangement, arguing that it would send the wrong message to his teammates.

Ronaldo claimed Jesus later asked him to prepare for a possible 30-minute appearance against Norway, but he was ultimately not brought on. He also alleged that the coach failed to address the matter before the Denmark fixture, claiming that Jesus had agreed to apologise to the fans for dropping some “of the stature of Pelé or Maradona”, a statement that drew widespread criticism worldwide.

Ronaldo also apologised to his teammates and Portuguese supporters for leaving the camp, accepting sole responsibility for his actions. He acknowledged that the Portuguese Football Federation could impose disciplinary action, adding that his status as captain should not exempt him from punishment.

Despite the controversy, Ronaldo reiterated his commitment to Portugal, saying he remained available to represent and win for his country.
