A 27-year-old woman working at a major tech company has asked Reddit users for advice after her mother raised concerns about her plans to marry her boyfriend. The woman, who is from Bengaluru, is dating a man from Bihar, and their different cultural backgrounds have made her mother unsure about the match.
Although both families appear open to the marriage, the mother’s concerns have made the woman rethink her decision. She has also admitted that she is not deeply in love with her boyfriend, leaving her unsure about taking the next step.
Woman Says Her Mother Warned Her About Cultural Differences
In a Reddit post titled, “Should I (27F) marry my boyfriend (30M) out of love or listen to my Mother’s advice on getting an arranged marriage ?”, the woman explained that she met her boyfriend at work, although they belong to different teams. They dated for a few months before deciding to get married.
She said she is South Indian and from Bengaluru, while her boyfriend is from Bihar and belongs to a different caste. Both met each other’s parents, and the families seemed convinced about the match. However, her mother remained unsure.
The woman shared her mother’s warning about the challenges that could come with their different backgrounds.
She wrote, “She said “You may marry him out of love now but cultural differences will create a huge hurdle in your life later. In case, in the future one of you two loses the job and have to shift cities, the priority will be to move in to his place. You will be moving into a place which is alien to you, speaking in a language which you are weak in, trying to assimilate in a culture which you have never been a part of, maybe doing things which you may not be comfortable with. Your love for him may fade away and become longing to be here again with our own people. Consider an arranged marriage for getting someone from our own community and of your liking. Whatever you do now, don’t regret it later””.
The advice made her think about whether she was ready for marriage. She admitted that she did not feel intensely in love with her boyfriend but considered him a safe person who was easy to talk to. She also clarified that they had not lived together or been physically intimate.
The post ended with a personal request: “PS: Please don’t DM me if you are Male.”
Reddit Users Tell Her Not To Rush Into Marriage
The post drew mixed reactions, with several users questioning why she wanted to marry someone she was not deeply in love with. One user wrote, “I’m not actually head over heels for him? Then why are you marrying him at all? Don’t marry him ffs!!”
Another commented, “Getting married within months of being together is ridiculous.” However, some users advised her not to make the decision based only on her mother’s concerns.
One person said, “Don’t listen to all these folks. Decide for yourself, think go and see his family and understand if it’ll work. Don’t break your marriage over a strangers advice, take the decision by yourself after thoroughly understanding the decision and it’s cons. Love is rare and you won’t find it again.”
Another user urged her to take more time to understand her boyfriend and his family, writing, “You need to know the guy you date but you need to understand his parents even better and the relationship between the guy and his parents. Most of these need years to know so dating for few months will hardly tell you anything other than you feel comfortable around him that too mainly in corporate and urban settings. You need to think hard and give it more time.”
One commenter also warned against marrying someone simply because he seemed like a safe option, saying, “Don’t get married just coz you think he’s a safe choice. Don’t ruin his life.”
