The Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon organisers on Friday announced a revised route for this year’s edition, with runners set to bypass Rail Bhawan, Sansad Marg and Patel Chowk amid ongoing protests against the Election Commission of India. The race will be held on Sunday.
Heavy police barricading around the three locations, which featured on the traditional route in previous editions, has prompted the change.
According to the organisers, who were quoted by news agency PTI, the route will be altered between the 10km and 13km marks. Runners will turn left from Kartavya Path towards Seva Teerth Circle and then take another left onto Maulana Azad Road. They will make a U-turn and proceed around Seva Teerth Circle towards Rafi Marg before turning right to rejoin Kartavya Path.
The revised route replaces the earlier stretch that took runners from Kartavya Path towards Rail Bhawan, Sansad Marg and Patel Chowk. There will also be no race start from Sansad Marg this year.
The protests against the Election Commission have seen demonstrators demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyaneshwar Kumar, alleging manipulation of electoral rolls.
Meanwhile, the Open 10K race will start from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The Champions with Disability Run and the Senior Citizens’ Run have also been rescheduled, with both events now set to begin at 6:30 am instead of the previously announced 7 am.
On Thursday, Delhi Police Traffic Inspector, Defence Colony, Madhurendra Kumar said around 200 personnel will be deployed for the event.
“Delhi Police is fully committed to ensuring the safety and security of every runner. We have been working closely with the organisers over the past one-and-a-half months to prepare for race day,” Kumar said.
“Our deployment will include around 200 police personnel, along with 70–80 traffic police personnel, to ensure smooth movement and security along the route. We will be present at every stage to support the organisers and ensure a safe and successful race,” he added.
