Stock Market Today: The domestic equity markets extended their losses on Monday, with the Sensex falling nearly 950 points and the Nifty declining over 1% to slip below 22,900 as sustained selling in information technology, banking and financial services stocks weighed on investor sentiment. The sell-off eroded nearly Rs 5 lakh crore in investor wealth.

The broader market also remained under pressure, while public sector banks continued to outperform.

As of 2:55 pm, the BSE Sensex was trading at 73,784.77, down 944.50 points, or 1.26%, from its previous close of 74,729.27. The index opened at 74,849.30 and fell to an intraday low of 73,708.54, extending its losses through the session.

The NSE Nifty 50 declined 276 points, or 1.19%, to 22,870.15, compared with its previous close of 23,146.15. The index opened at 23,150.85 and touched an intraday low of 22,845.

The sell-off eroded nearly Rs 5 lakh crore in investor wealth, with the total market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies falling to around Rs 467.63 lakh crore from Rs 472.62 lakh crore at the previous close.

IT, private banking stocks lead losses

Information technology and banking stocks remained among the biggest drags on the benchmark indices. The Nifty IT index fell 1.55%, while the Nifty Private Bank index declined 1.87%. The Nifty Financial Services index lost 1.57%, and the Nifty Bank fell 0.63%.

Among individual stocks, Axis Bank was down 4.09%, while Infosys declined 2.85%. HDFC Bank fell 2.38%, Bajaj Finance dropped 2.47% and Trent lost 3.02%. UltraTech Cement declined 2.98%, while Bharti Airtel fell 1.88%.

Selling pressure was also visible in consumer-oriented stocks. The Nifty FMCG index declined 1.40%, while the Nifty Consumer Durables index fell 1.15%. The Nifty Auto index lost 0.62%, and the Nifty Pharma index declined 0.59%.

PSU banks buck broader market weakness

Public sector banks remained an exception to the broader market sell-off. The Nifty PSU Bank index gained 2.51% to 8,298.20, making it the strongest-performing sectoral index.

Among Sensex constituents, State Bank of India rose 1.18%, while Adani Ports gained 1.13%. Larsen & Toubro advanced 0.43%, and Tata Consultancy Services edged up 0.11%.

The outperformance of PSU banks contrasted with the weakness in private lenders, with the Nifty Private Bank index falling nearly 1.9%.

Broader markets decline; India VIX rises nearly 6%

Selling extended across market capitalisations. The Nifty 100 declined 1.04%, while the Nifty 200 and Nifty 500 fell 1.03% and 1.01%, respectively. The Nifty Midcap 100 dropped 0.96%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 declined 0.75%. The Nifty Microcap 250 underperformed, falling 1.34%.

India VIX, which measures expected near-term market volatility, rose 5.93% to 14.90, signalling heightened uncertainty among market participants.
