Tamil Nadu Minister for Cooperation V. Gandhiraj on Thursday (November 5, 2026) launched the sale of the ‘Vettri Special Vegetables Kit’, a package containing 10 varieties of vegetables and being sold at 218 cooperative shops across the State at a subsidised rate of ₹100.

The Minister launched the sale at Chinthamani Super Market at the Poonga Nagar Cooperative Wholesale Outlet in Anna Nagar West in Chennai. The sale of the special vegetables kit will continue for three days, until November 7.

Each kit will contain 500 grams of onion, 500 grams of tomato, 250 grams of brinjal, 250 grams of potato, 200 grams of carrot, 200 grams of beans, 100 grams of green chilli, 100 grams of lemon, 50 grams of ginger and one coconut weighing between 400 and 450 grams. The total weight of the 10 varieties of vegetables will be between 2.55 kg and 2.6 kg.

The objective of selling this kit through cooperative stores was to ensure that the public gets fresh and quality vegetables required for cooking at an affordable price, lower than the prevailing market rates, ahead of the Deepavali festival, an official release said.

Apart from the 218 cooperative outlets across the State, this vegetable kit will be sold through four mobile vending vehicles in Chennai. The Minister also flagged off these vehicles.

The kits will be sold during the regular working hours of the outlets. To ensure that more people benefit from the scheme, the State government has limited the sale to one kit per person under this initiative.

Some of the beneficiaries who received the kits from the Minister told The Hindu the scheme was highly beneficial amid the prevailing food inflation and would be particularly useful during the festival season. They also said that the kit would have cost more than ₹150 in the market if the items in it had been purchased individually.

P. Amudha, Additional Chief Secretary, Cooperation, Food and Consumer Protection; G. Latha, Registrar of Cooperative Societies were among those present.
