The Kremlin said Estonian PM Kaja Kallas, who has been nominated to lead the EU’s foreign policy, has a history of hostile statements towards Russia. Peskov added that Ursula von der Leyen, who has been nominated for a third term as the EU President, “is not a proponent of normalisation of relations.” Several Russian officials suggested that the policies championed by Kallas will only lead to further escalation. Kalas, selected to speak for Brussels internationally and balance conflicting interests in the EU, has a reputation as an uncompromising hawk on Russia.
