Syria’s interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa visited Turkey on February 4 for discussions with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, marking a significant step in improving ties between the two nations. Erdogan pledged support to Syria in combating terrorism, including threats from ISIS and the PKK, while al-Sharaa extended an invitation for Erdogan to visit Syria soon. Talks included a potential defence pact that would allow Turkey to use Syrian airspace and establish airbases, with Palmyra military airport and the T4 base in Homs province under consideration. Turkey may also assist in training Syria’s new unified military after the integration of rebel factions.Turkey aims to solidify its influence in post-Assad Syria, addressing regional security concerns, particularly regarding the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Ankara sees the SDF’s main component, the YPG, as linked to the PKK, which has waged an insurgency in Turkey. While Turkey has threatened action against the YPG, it is pursuing diplomatic solutions for now. Additionally, Russia is negotiating with Syria over the future of its naval and airbases. Al-Sharaa’s visit follows talks with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on reconstruction and economic revival, highlighting Syria’s efforts to secure regional support. ğan n18oc_world n18oc_crux
