IMA Kerala faces scrutiny over tax dues
The Taxes departmenthas issued orders directing the District Registrar (General), Thiruvananthapuram, to examine the balance sheet, income and expenditure statements, minutes book and related documents of the Indian Medical Association (IMA Kerala State Branch) and its allied organisations and submit a report.
The decision came on a report filed by the Director General of Goods and Services Tax (GST) Intelligence, Kochi zonal unit, to the State government in August this year in connection with a probe related to the IMA’s GST dues. The examination by the district registrar (general) will cover the IMA Kerala State branch, Professional Equipment and Employment Protection Society (PEPS) and IMAGE – IMA Goes Eco-Friendly, Periyar house, according to a November 4 order issued by the department.
According to an October 3 report by the Inspector General (Registration), the PEPS was found to be a registered entity which has filed its income-expenditure statements and list of office-bearers up to September 30, 2023. But the other entities, such as IMAGE and Periyar House, were not found to be registered.
The order noted that the documents should be examined to ascertain whether or not the office-bearers were involved in any irregularities or discrepancies. The inspection of documents has been ordered on the strength of Section 19 of the Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act, which deals with the “power to call for accounts and inspection of books.’
