Political parties across party lines urged the State government to enhance the pay of Grade-II police constables and implement the recommendations of the Fifth Tamil Nadu Police Commission.

MLAs representing various parties, including the Congress, CPI (M), PMK, demanded that the constables be paid on a par with other entry level jobs in the government.

PMK leader G.K. Mani said the strength of the police force should be enhanced taking into account the increase in population. Risk allowance to police personnel should be increased from ₹500 to ₹1,000. The government should make an announcement on the implementation of the commission’s recommendations, he said.

Sinthanai Selvan of the VCK said sanitary workers in the police department were being paid a monthly remuneration of ₹2,000 and appealed to the Chief Minister to increase it to ₹15,000.

BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan said gender sensitisation course was imperative for the force. CPI (M) MLA V.P. Nagaimaali said police constables should be paid on a par with the salary drawn by their counterparts in other States. He said the government should look into the increasing number of encounter killings in the State. Congress leader Selvaperunthagai said weekly off for police personnel should be implemented.
