A train derailment attempt was reported at Kottikulam in Kasaragod district of Kerala on Saturday night (December 20, 2025) after a concrete slab was found placed on the track near the Kottikulam railway station. The slab was found around 8.30 p.m. on the track adjacent to platform number 1 on the southern side of the station, railway officials said.

The slab was noticed by passengers and local residents, who immediately alerted the station master. Railway staff rushed to the spot and removed the obstruction, averting a potential disaster.

The identity of those behind the act is yet to be ascertained. Based on a complaint filed by the Kottikulam railway station superintendent, the Bekal police have registered a case.

The incident has assumed added significance as it occurred on the opening day of the Bekal fest, prompting authorities to treat the matter with utmost seriousness.

A similar derailment attempt had been reported in Kottikulam last year, when an iron rod was found on the track. Investigations at the time revealed that a woman collecting scrap materials was behind the incident. There were also earlier instances of stone chips being found on the track, police sources said. But this is the first time a concrete slab has been discovered.

Authorities have announced that security along the stretch will be strengthened and surveillance in the area intensified. Bekal Deputy Superintendent of Police V.V. Manoj said the investigation has been stepped up.
