Sikkim MP Indra Hang Subba has submitted a memorandum to Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, seeking the establishment of a separate bar council for the northeastern State.

A statement from the MP’s office said in his submission, Mr. Subba highlighted that at present, the legal fraternity of Sikkim falls under the jurisdiction of the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim.

He noted that this arrangement poses several practical challenges for advocates in Sikkim, particularly in terms of accessibility, adequate representation, and addressing the specific needs of the State’s legal community.

The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha leader underscored the importance of having an independent bar council to strengthen institutional efficiency, and support the growth of the legal profession within the state.

A separate bar council would enhance governance, improve service delivery, and contribute to better access to justice for the people of Sikkim, the Lok Sabha MP said in the memorandum.

Mr. Subba urged the Law Ministry to take necessary steps, including appropriate provisions under the Advocates Act, 1961, to facilitate the creation of a separate bar council for Sikkim at the earliest.
