Former Pakistani prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan on Tuesday said he fears for his life as he remains in Adiala Jail, where he is serving a 14-year sentence in the Al-Qadir Trust graft case along with other corruption-related convictions that keep him in custody.
“The military establishment has done all they could against me. All that is left for them is to now murder me,” Khan said, according to a PTI statement, released after Imran Khan met his sister Uzma Khan. The party alleged that he has been kept in solitary confinement with no electricity or sunlight, questionable food, no clean drinking water, no medical assistance and none of the basic facilities normally available to inmates.
Khan alleged that he is being held in conditions similar to an inmate on death row and claimed the military leadership would be responsible if anything happened to him.
“If anything happens to me, the Army Chief and DG ISI will be responsible,” Khan said, according to a PTI statement. He added, “I have the same facilities that an inmate on death row has.”
The party said Khan has been kept in solitary confinement and denied basic facilities. In his statement, the former prime minister described the conditions as inhumane. “I was tortured by being confined in a cage and treated worse than animals. Electricity to my cell was shut off for five days. I was confined to the cell for ten days,” he said.
Khan is also accusing the powerful army chief of political persecution. “Asim Munir is the most tyrannical dictator in history and is mentally unstable,” he said.
Uzma Khan was permitted to meet him inside Adiala Jail, the high-security prison in Rawalpindi located a short distance from the Pakistan Army’s General Headquarters (GHQ).
The meeting between the former prime minister and his sister lasted between 25 and 35 minutes, sources told CNN-News18. According to people close to Uzma Khan, Imran Khan appeared “fine, fit, and in high spirits.”
They said the PTI founder remained mentally strong and shared a message for his party leadership, along with remarks aimed at what he described as an “undemocratic regime.”
However, the sources also said Imran Khan repeated his allegation that Pakistan’s army chief, General Asim Munir, was responsible for the “mental torture” he claims to be facing in custody.
Speaking after the meeting, Uzma Khan said Imran was angry about certain issues related to jail administration, though she maintained that his “morale remained high.”
