Bhai Dooj 2023: Significance

While this day aims to strengthen the bond between brothers and sisters, there are many mythological narratives behind it. One of the legends surrounding Bhai Dooj is that of Lord Yama, the god of death. It is believed that he paid a visit to his sister, Yami, on this day.

She had applied the auspicious Tilak on his forehead at the time and prayed for his well-being. Hence, it is considered that individuals who receive the tilak on their foreheads from their sisters will never be sent into hell.

Another folk tale around Bhai Dooj mentions that after destroying the demon Narakasur, Lord Krishna went to his sister Subhadra’s house, where she greeted him with flowers, sweets, and a sacred candle. She had also applied the auspicious Tilak on her brother’s forehead.
