Earlier in the day, Mamata Banerjee dismissed the allegations levelled by the victim’s family and called them slander against her government. She asserted that no money was ever offered to the family.

The mother of the trainee doctor who was brutally raped and killed at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last month, on Monday hit out at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for lying about the compensation offered to them over the horrific incident.

The deceased’s mother said that Banerjee did offer the monetary compensation following the heinous crime.

“The Chief Minister is lying. My daughter will not return. Would I lie in her name? The Chief Minister told us that we would receive money and suggested that we create something in our daughter’s memory. I responded that I would come to her office to collect the money once my daughter gets justice,” news agency ANI quoted the victim’s mother as saying.

Earlier, the victim’s father and aunt had alleged that the Kolkata Police attempted to cover up the case and offered them money to keep quiet.

She also termed Banerjee’s appeal to the people to stop their protests and prepare for the upcoming Durga Puja festivities as “inhuman”.

“It seems inhuman to me because I am the mother of a girl. I have lost a child, so I feel inhuman. If people from all over the country want to return for the (Durga Puja) festival, they can,” she said.

“Durga Puja was celebrated in my house too. My daughter used to do it at home. But, now darkness has engulfed our lives. How can I tell people to celebrate the festival during this time,” she added.

Mamata dismissed allegations

Earlier in the day, Banerjee dismissed the allegations levelled by the victim’s family and called them slander against her government. She asserted that no money was ever offered to the family.

“I have never offered money to deceased doctor’s family, this is nothing just slander,” news agency PTI quoted Mamata as saying. “I told the deceased doctor’s family that if they wanted to do something in their daughter’s memory, or government is with them,” she added.

While speaking at an administrative review meeting at the state secretariat ‘Nabanna’ earlier on Monday, the chief minister urged the people to “return to festivities” as Durga puja is round the corner.

“If you stay on the roads every night, elderly people suffer from sleep deprivation because of noise pollution. We haven’t acted on state pollution control board norms. One month has passed. I request you to return to festivities and demand that the CBI completes investigations at the earliest,” she said.

The victim’s mother, however, said that the protests against her daughter’s death would continue until justice was ensured for her.

SC ASKS BENGAL DOCTORS TO RESUME WORK

The Supreme Court on Monday has urged doctors on protest in West Bengal to return to their duties by 5 pm on Tuesday (September 10), and asked the police and the state administration to ensure their safety. The top court, however, has cautioned that the doctors could be liable for disciplinary action if continuous abstention from work continued.

A three-judge bench comprising CJI Chandrachud, Justice Manoj Misra and Justice JB Pardiwala was hearing the case related to a trainee doctor’s rape and murder at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

HOW WAS AUTOPSY CONDUCTED

The Supreme Court also voiced its concern over the absence of a key document that was needed for the postmortem of the victim.

The top court asked the West Bengal government how the autopsy of the trainee doctor was conducted without any formal request. CJI Chandrachud asked, “Where is the challan of the body when it’s handed over for post-mortem?”

Terming the rape and killing “horrific”, the court had excoriated the West Bengal government over the delay in filing an FIR in connection with the incident and allowing thousands of people to vandalise the state-run hospital.

The rape and killing of the junior doctor in a seminar hall of the hospital has sparked nationwide protests.
