China Warns Against ‘External Interference’ On Taiwan After US Releases Security Strategy
Last Updated:
China warns the US not to interfere in Taiwan after the US unveils a deterrence-focused security plan, which Taiwan’s leaders welcome.
Last week, the US released its new security strategy aimed at building up military power to prevent conflict with Beijing over Taiwan.
China on Monday vowed to defend its sovereignty and warned against “external interference” after the US released its new security strategy aimed at building up military power to prevent conflict with Beijing over Taiwan.
“The US side should … handle the Taiwan question with the utmost prudence, and stop indulging and supporting ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces in seeking independence by force or resisting reunification by force,” Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry, told reporters.
This came in response to the US releasing the National Security Strategy document last week. “Deterring a conflict over Taiwan, ideally by preserving military overmatch, is a priority,” it said.
China claims Taiwan to be part of its territory and has again and again emphasised its intention to use force to bring Taiwan under its control.
While the US does not have any formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan, it remains the country’s most important backer and is required by law to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself.
The document has been welcomed by Taiwan. In a post on X, President Lai Ching-te said: “Greatly appreciate that the U.S. National Security Strategy prioritises deterring a conflict over Taiwan”.
Taiwan Defence Minister Wellington Koo said: “The United States is vigorously promoting that the countries in the Indo-Pacific region work together to establish an effective form of collective deterrence. We in Taiwan must also strengthen our self-defence capabilities.”
Replying to a question on the document, Reuters quoted Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo saying China was willing to work with Washington to promote stable ties while safeguarding its sovereignty, security and development interests.
