Comedian Recalls His ‘Child Marriage’, Reveals It Ended Due To His Height In Class 7

If you’re into stand-up comedy, chances are you’ve come across comedian Onkar Yadav, whose hilarious set about his parents’ child marriage went viral last year. Known for turning real-life experiences into sharp, witty anecdotes, the Haryana-born comedian recently revealed that his parents weren’t the only ones affected by the old tradition. He himself had a brush with “child marriage”.

During his appearance on The Prakhar Gupta Xperience show on YouTube, Onkar shared in detail about this unusual experience. The host asked if it was true that he had got married as a child. Onkar clarified, “I did not have a full-full child marriage.” When Prakhar questioned what he meant by that, the comedian explained, “My brother was getting married, and the girl’s family saw me and thought that I would be a good candidate for their daughter. We were both in the first grade. So, they sealed the deal.”

The host pointed out that Onkar couldn’t even say no to the arrangement as he was just six years old. However, the comedian revealed that he didn’t complain. Sharing that the sex ratio in Haryana is better now as compared to his childhood, Onkar mentioned that he was quite happy with his marriage, and so were his parents. He also shared that he loves his now-fiancée, Shreya Priyam Roy, because he was previously married. Then, he joked that the short-lived arrangement made him a “widower”.

“I was happy, my parents were happy. My marriage was decided when I was in the first grade, and by the time I was in the seventh grade, I thought that I was set in life. All I was worried about was my studies, because I knew that I didn’t have to worry about getting married,” he said. However, the girl’s family eventually ended the marriage. Onkar shared, “But, when I was in seventh grade, the girl’s family lost interest.” He mentioned that the girl’s family used to live in the city and for them, the marriage was kind of a “joke”.

What they didn’t know was that his family was serious about this arrangement. “They didn’t know about my parents’ child marriage. In my household, it was a serious matter. It was assumed that I would pass the 10th and 12th grades, and then it was up to me if I wanted to study further, but my marriage had been fixed.”

Onkar recalled them saying, “Do you still believe in all this? Our daughter is, anyway, three inches taller than him.” He summed up the end of his childhood marriage with his signature wit, saying, “Phir toot gayi shaadi.” His remark left the host in splits. Onkar also added that he was affected by the break-up so much so that he would take up fights against anyone who said a word against his childhood “wife”.
