Actress Dalljiet Kaur, who recently ended her second marriage with Kenya-based Nikhil Patel, has broken her silence about her divorce from actor Shalin Bhanot. Speaking candidly on SCREEN’s Dear Me, Dalljiet shared her journey of healing and co-parenting after their marriage ended in 2015 amidst allegations of domestic violence.
Dalljiet recalled how her whirlwind romance with Shalin began during their time on Kul Vadhu and Nach Baliye, where their love story unfolded in the public eye. “We got married within a couple of months after winning Nach Baliye. I wish I had gotten to know him better before marriage. If I had, these things wouldn’t have happened,” she admitted.
The actress spoke about the emotional toll her first marriage’s failure took on her. “I was in denial for more than 2-3 years that my marriage broke. The word ‘divorce’ wouldn’t sit well with me; I would just break down and cry. Jaydon was an infant at that time. It wasn’t easy. I even avoided any romantic advances because, in my head, I was still married,” she revealed.
During the nine years after her divorce, Shalin remained sporadically involved in their son Jaydon’s life, though not in a decision-making capacity. Dalljiet allowed the father-son meetings for Jaydon’s well-being. However, she noted, “If you ask Shalin today how old Jaydon is, he wouldn’t know.”
Jaydon’s longing for a father motivated Dalljiet to remarry. “He was thrilled for the second marriage because he missed having a father. Watching him crave for a dad, especially on occasions like Father’s Day, was heartbreaking. It felt like I failed him,” she shared.
While Dalljiet is now focusing on rebuilding her life and supporting her son, she reflected on her journey. “No child deserves to go through this. Protecting Jaydon was my priority, and I’ll continue to do so.”
