In less than 20 days of the stampede at the New Delhi railway station that killed 18, the railway ministry has transferred the Delhi Divisional Railway Manager (DRM). The stampede took place at the New Delhi Railway Station on the night of February 15.

In an order issued on March 4, the railways replaced Sukhwinder Singh and posted Pushpesh Tripathi from the North Central Railway.

The joining date for the 1995 batch officer, Tripathi, has not been announced so far. Also, no posting has been given to Singh. Tripathi was posted in Prayagraj and is from the Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers.

Speaking to News18, a railway ministry official said the replacement has nothing to do with the incident and the inquiry is underway.

“The report on the incident is still pending. Singh was posted as Delhi DRM in July 2021. It has been close to two years. The officer posted before Singh (Dimpy Garg) was also replaced after serving the post for almost the equal time,” the official said, demanding anonymity.

However, the official did not deny the possibility of punishment to the officials, if the report finds them guilty.

The DRM is the head of a Railway Division and is responsible for the overall operation and maintenance of that division. They report to the General Manager (GM) of their zone.

On February 15, there was a sudden rush of passengers at the New Delhi railway station. Between 9.30 pm and 10 pm, a stampede took place that killed 18 people. A two-member high-level committee was formed by the Northern Railway to investigate the incident.

The railways claimed that in a two-hour window, between 6 pm and 8 pm, 2,600 additional passengers had booked their ticket at New Delhi.

The rush was for the Maha Kumbh Mela, which concluded last month. It is being said that an announcement about a change in the departure platform of a special train to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh led to the movement of people that resulted in the deadly situation.

After the Balasore train incident took place which claimed over 290 lives and injured more than 1,000 people in June 2022, a number of officials were moved, including the Kharagpur DRM.
