The restive province of Balochistan was once again the scene of a major insurgent attack, CNN-News18 has learnt, as the separatist Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) ambushed a Pakistani security forces convoy in the Kalat district, resulting in the death of nine security personnel, including two commandos from the elite Special Services Group (SSG).
The coordinated assault, claimed by the BLA, targeted a convoy of security forces, with fighters employing sophisticated tactics, including the use of snipers and Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPGs). Sources indicate that two military vehicles were severely damaged in the RPG strike, marking a significant operational blow.
The intense exchange of fire reportedly lasted for approximately 50 minutes. The scale and duration of the engagement point to the growing sophistication of the BLA’s attacks against Pakistan’s security establishment.
The security personnel killed in the attack have been identified as Naik Tariq, Sepoy Muzammil, Sepoy Faraz, Sepoy Azam Nawaz, Lance Naik Shahjahan, and Sepoy Abshar, alongside the two SSG commandos and one other unnamed member.
The BLA is an ethnonationalist militant organisation that seeks the separation of Balochistan from Pakistan, alleging economic exploitation and marginalisation by the central government. The group has intensified its campaign in recent years, frequently targeting security forces, government installations, and increasingly, projects linked to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
This attack in Kalat is the latest in a series of deadly assaults that highlight the persistent security challenges in Balochistan, which remains central to Pakistan’s economic future but is plagued by a decades-long insurgency. Authorities are expected to launch extensive clearance operations in the area following the assault.
