Education Budget 2026 Live: From New AIIMS To Design School, Key Announcements For Education Sector

Union Education Budget 2026 Live Updates: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday presented her ninth consecutive Union Budget 2026–27. She announced the government will ensure at least one girls’ hostel in every district and set up a new institute for design in the Northeast.

The Budget also proposes support for the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies, Mumbai, to establish content labs in 15,000 secondary schools. In addition, the NDA government plans to set up five university townships near major industrial and logistics centres.

The Finance Minister also announced proposals linked to healthcare and mental health. These include setting up three new National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research and upgrading seven existing ones. The government will also create a network of 1,000 accredited clinical trial sites across the country.

Further, Sitharaman said 3 new AIIMs and institutes for Ayurveda will be established, and a second NIMHANS will be set up to strengthen mental health services.

In the previous budget, the Bharatiya Janata Party government announced plans to add 75,000 medical seats over five years and strengthen infrastructure at IITs established after 2014. For 2025, the Centre had earmarked Rs 1,28,650.05 crore for education, a 6.65 percent rise compared to the previous year.
