Some stories feel so personal, they reflect our own lives like a mirror. Exactly 25 years ago, Indian television experienced a turning point. On July 3, 2000, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi premiered, not just launching a mega-hit serial but sparking a cultural phenomenon that would shape generations to come.

Even after going off-air in 2008, the Ektaa Kapoor-produced show remains a household name and was remembered for its gripping drama, emotional arcs, and, of course, the unforgettable characters of Tulsi and Mihir. Starring Smriti Irani and Amar Upadhyay in the lead roles, the show not only ruled the TRP charts for years but also became a daily ritual for millions of Indian families.

As the show completes 25 glorious years, the buzz surrounding its potential return is already thrilling fans. And on this milestone, producer Ektaa Kapoor and lead stars Smriti Irani and Amar Upadhyay have come forward to reflect on the legacy that continues to shape Indian television.

In a heartfelt conversation with The Times of India, Smriti Irani, who became a household name as Tulsi Virani, shared, “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi isn’t just a show — it’s a shared memory. For those who created it and the millions who embraced it, it was a story of families, faith and the fabric that binds us across generations. Twenty-five years later, it still lives in our hearts. My gratitude to those who made the journey possible.”

Producer Ekta Kapoor, who created a revolution in Indian soap operas with the show, recalled, “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi still lives in every beat of my heart. When we started, we never imagined Tulsi would become a family to millions. Even today, people remember the title track, the tears and the emotion it sparked. This milestone belongs to every writer, actor, crew member, and most of all, every viewer who made it a part of their lives. We didn’t just make a show, we created a bond that still feels like a home.”

Amar Upadhyay, who played the iconic role of Mihir Virani, spoke with equal emotion: “Twenty-five years ago, we began a journey that was more than just a show-it was a mirror to a million households, a reflection of traditions, love, trials and the changing face of Indian families. Being part of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi wasn’t just a role, it was a responsibility, a privilege and a turning point not just for me but for everyone who lived and breathed this world with us.”

He added, “Even today, when someone calls me ‘Mihir,’ there’s a warmth and familiarity in it– like a long-lost family member greeting you after years. That’s the kind of love you can’t manufacture; it can only be lived.”

The actor also shared a candid moment from their recent reunion that hints at the unchanged chemistry between the cast. Amar recalled with a smile, “Smriti hasn’t changed a bit. She looked at me and said, ‘Tu buddha kab hoga?’” And this is a hint that the offscreen camaraderie between them is still the same, and that’s what will make their return even stronger.

Addressing the growing excitement around the show’s grand comeback, he shared, “The love story between Tulsi and Mihir has only deepened. Our characters have evolved, and so have we.”

As the whispers of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi returning to television grow louder, fans across all generations are holding on to hope to see the Virani family once again grace their screens. While key details of the comeback are still under wraps, speculations are rife: Will the entire Virani clan return? Will the story pick up from where it left off? Or will it offer a fresh take on the saga that once ruled living rooms across India?
