Protests erupted in Mandya, Karnataka, against the traffic police over the death of a 4-year-old girl after the traffic police stopped the girl’s parents for not wearing a helmet.

According to the police, the deceased is identified as Hrithiksha (4), daughter of Ashok and Vanishri of Goravanahalli, in Maddur taluk.

A large number of people staged a protest blaming the traffic police for the tragedy, following which three ASIs (Assistant Sub-Inspectors) were suspended.

Protesters claimed that the couple was rushing Hrithiksha to get treatment for a dog bite on their two-wheeler when traffic cops attempted to stop them for a check.

The protesters claimed that the police grabbed the handle of the motorcycle to stop it, causing the vehicle to lose balance and all three riders to fall. The child suffered severe injuries and was rushed to Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) hospital in an autorickshaw, where she was declared dead on arrival.

Following the incident, the victim’s parents and the public protested at the spot with the child’s body, demanding justice.

Reacting to the incident, Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy posted on X, “I am deeply hurt by the death of a child in Mandya. The traffic police should behave responsibly. Checking the vehicles to create fear among the motorists should be stopped. If they were a little cautious, the girl’s death could have been prevented.”

District in-charge Minister N Chaluvarayaswamy also shared his grief over the incident on social media. “Suitable action would be taken against the police personnel on duty,” he said.
