Google Doodle today honours the late singer KK, who made his debut as a playback singer on this day in 1996 with the song “Chhod Aaye Hum” from the film Maachis.

KK was born on August 23, 1968, in Delhi. He studied at Kirori Mal College, Delhi University, and initially worked in marketing before fully committing to music.

In 1994, he sent a demo tape to well-known Indian artists, which led to his first performances in commercial jingles. KK’s official entry into Hindi cinema came in 1999 with the song “Tadap Tadap” from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.

That same year, he released his debut album, Pal, featuring hit songs that quickly brought him into the spotlight.

Over the years, KK achieved remarkable success, recording around 3,500 jingles in 11 languages.

His versatility and captivating voice made him a sought-after artist in Indian cinema.

Throughout his impressive three-decade career, he sang over 500 songs in Hindi and more than 200 in Telugu, Bengali, Kannada, and Malayalam.

KK received six Filmfare Award nominations and won two Star Screen Awards, among numerous other accolades. He is celebrated as one of India’s most gifted playback singers.

To honour his legacy, a statue was erected in Kolkata, where he performed his final concert.
